When a tooth needs to come out

Saving a natural tooth is usually the first choice. Sometimes that is not possible: a tooth broken below the gum line, a tooth with severe decay, an infected tooth that cannot be treated with a root canal, or a wisdom tooth that keeps getting inflamed. In those cases an extraction can be the quickest way out of pain.

Not every painful tooth needs to be pulled. The $99 emergency exam and X-ray tells us whether the tooth can be saved, and the dentist walks you through the options, including a root canal where that makes sense, before you decide.

What to expect

Some extractions, such as deeply impacted wisdom teeth, may need an oral surgeon. If that is the case, we will tell you, help with the pain today, and point you to the next step.

Aftercare basics

Bite firmly on clean gauze for 20 minutes without checking it. For the first 24 hours, do not rinse hard, spit, smoke or use a straw, which can disturb the clot. Stick to soft foods and follow the instructions we give you. If heavy bleeding continues after 45 minutes of firm pressure, call us during our hours, and if it will not stop, go to the emergency room.

Related problems

An extraction is often the end point of something else. See toothache, broken tooth or abscess and swelling for what to do while you wait.

What a visit looks like

Please call (215) 357-6241 before you head over, or use the online booking link, so we can have a chair ready. Every emergency visit starts with a $99 exam and X-ray. The dentist looks at the tooth, explains what is causing the problem in plain language, and quotes any treatment before anything starts. Same-day options in the office include extractions, root canals and temporary restorations. If something needs a specialist or a lab, the goal is to get you comfortable today and set up the next step.

Bring a photo ID, your dental insurance card if you have one, and a list of the medications you take. We are out of network, but our billing coordinator files your claim as a courtesy and can estimate your coverage before treatment. Cherry and CareCredit financing are available, and we take all major cards.

Some things need a hospital, not a dentist

Go to the emergency room or call 911 instead of calling us if you have any of these:

  • Facial swelling that affects your breathing or swallowing
  • Swelling that is closing your eye, or spreading down your neck
  • A fever with facial swelling
  • A possible broken jaw, or a jaw you cannot close
  • Bleeding that will not stop after 20 minutes of firm pressure

A dental infection that reaches the airway is life threatening. If you are unsure, go to the hospital.

Questions

Can you pull a tooth the same day?

Often, yes. After the exam and X-ray, if extraction is the right option and it can be done safely in our office, we can usually do it the same visit.

Does it hurt?

The area is numbed with local anesthetic before we start. You may feel pressure. Soreness afterward is common and usually managed with over-the-counter pain relievers if you can take them.

Do you remove wisdom teeth?

Many wisdom teeth can be removed in the office. Deeply impacted ones may need an oral surgeon, and we will tell you if that applies.

How much does an extraction cost?

The emergency exam and X-ray is $99. The extraction itself is quoted in the chair before we start.
